Network Project Team
The Network project are researchers have been conducting two projects who are all involved in Japanese language education at various institutions in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The first project was led by A/Prof Carol Hayes (ANU) and A/Prof Ikuko Nakane (UMelb) with the assistance of Dr Emi Otsuji (UTS) and Ms Nagisa Fukui (UNSW), Dr Masayoshi Ogino representing New Zealand’s Japanese Studies Aotearoa New Zealand (JSANZ) and Mr Masanori Nagami representing Singapore’s Japanese Language Teachers Association of Singapore (JALTAS). The project employed four research assistants, Ms Maho Fukuno (ANU), Ms Tamami Mori (UMelb), Ms Pepi Ronalds (Monash) and Dr Laura Emily Clark (U New England) who played an active role in collating and presenting the data.
The second project was conducted by A/Prof Carol Hayes (ANU), Dr Rowena Ward (Wollongong U), Dr Laura Emily Clark (U New England) and Dr Toshiyuki Nakamura. This project, also funded by the Japan Foundation Sakura Mini Grants, explored motivations of tertiary students studying Japanese at the intermediate and advanced levels.

In memory of Prof Carol Hayes

Professor Carol Hayes passed away on 16 October 2022. Dr Carol Hayes was Professor of Japanese Language and Studies in the College of Asia and the Pacific and Distinguished Educator at the Australian National University. Her research interests included the portrayal of social and cultural issues in Japanese creative production and Japanese language teaching methodologies and practice. A recipient of a 2013 OLT National Teaching Excellence Award, Carol was an innovation leader and early adopter in developing and supporting flexible and online learning within Asian Studies at the ANU, pushing boundaries in technical innovation to make language learning more exciting and student oriented. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, positive energy and invaluable contributions to our field in our memories.
